Many years ago, I worked as a domestic in the local hospice. I worked weekends at the time and would arrive early in the morning to begin my shift. With it being the winter, the hospice was mainly in darkness, with very little activity. It wasn't uncommon for the nurses to begin morning washes around 30 minutes to an hour after my arrival.
There was two parts to the hospice, the main ward area which contained 10 rooms, occupied by the patients and the empty day unit section (this is where patients would attend during the day to do crafts, mindfulness activities, etc). The main ward area was closed off by double doors.
I was very mindful of not wanting to disturb the patients so I would start off cleaning the day unit section first. This area was in darkness. It had a small corridor just outside the public toilets, and rather than switch on the main lights, I would just scrub the small corridor floor by the light of the public toilets.
Being first thing in the morning, in the semi-darkness, with my scrubbing machine doing all the work, my mind was drifting off to things in my mind. I recall humming to myself when all of a sudden I heard a loud audible whisper, right in my ear say my name, "KAREN!".
I almost jumped out of my skin and quickly switched off my scrubbing machine, thinking that a nurse was stood behind me trying to get my attention. When I turned around, there was no one there. I was all alone in the semi darkness. I got such a fright!
It was a few weeks later, as I was walking out of my small domestic room that I looked up absent mindedly and saw an old woman sitting at one of the small dining tables. I looked away but quickly looked back to be polite and acknowledge the lady but there was no one there!
A few months after this, I was about to go into the 4 bed bay area and begin cleaning. I was stood sorting out what cleaning items I would need from my cleaning trolley, when I suddenly felt a burning sensation on my left cheek. I recall thinking that it was painful and wondered what on earth was causing it. I put all my cleaning items back on the trolley and made my way to the bathroom that was next the the bay area, to see if there was anything on my face. When I looked in the mirror, there was a one inch scratch had appeared on my cheek!
Whether the scratch was caused by the old lady or was caused by some other phenomena, I have no idea, but lets just say that I would only work with the lights on after those events occurred!
I look forward to reading your blogs about your experiences!
